Wings over Wheels

Civil Air Patrol's Erie Squadron 502 participated in Wings over Wheels Erie Runway Gala on August 24-25, 2013.  Our hard working Cadets and Senior Members spent time meeting with young people from around the area, educating them about the Civil Air Patrol, and encouraging them to explore whether CAP would be right for them.  We hope to hear back from many of them, and are expecting to see them at our September 9 meeting!

We also were fortunate to have quite a few past 502 members drop by!  They shared stories, reminisced, and we even convinced a couple to stop by our Squadron for a meeting or two... maybe even rejoin our ranks.

Our Cadets also were fortunate enough to be able to tour the PBY, the B-25, and the B-17.  A couple of them were even able to prime the engines of the B-25 and B-17 with the ground crew!  They even met the Great, Great Grandson of General Jimmy Doolittle!  Our Aerospace Education Officer gave an impromptu lesson at the booth next door, who was offering up a paper airplane contest.  The Cadets (and Captain Zeyfang!) had a blast while learning, on the fly!  (no pun intended!)

It was a busy, but great weekend... the Cadets walked away with some experiences they may never have again,  and we had the opportunity to educate the public on the benefits of Civil Air Patrol!

We'd like to say a special thank you to the crews of the B-17 Flying Fortress, the B-25 Mitchell from the Yankee Air Museum, and the PBY 5A Canso from the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum.  They were especially kind and accommodating to our Civil Air Patrol Cadets, and gave them some fantastic opportunities to see these amazing machines up close and personal!  Thank you again!

We also met a man who was there to show support for his cousin, Jake Miller, who was seriously injured in a Motocross accident.  He has been travelling around and taking pictures at events, so that Jake can see how much support and well wishes he's received through his trying time, once he's recovered.  Civil Air Patrol Erie Composite Squadron 502 certainly wishes him well on his road to recovery!  Fight Hard & Stay strong, Jake!  You can read more about Jake's journey here:

Stay Strong Jake!

Our Cadets and Senior Members kept busy all day meeting new people, educating people about what Civil Air Patrol does for the community, explaining CAP's history in the United States, and recruiting new members.  We also focused on finding our 502 alumni, and collecting their contact information, so that we may hear their stories.  We had many alumni stop by our tent, from 1960's-1990's, and beyond.  We will be reaching out to them within the next couple of weeks for more information, and maybe even try to talk some of them into rejoining our membership rolls!   Thank you to everyone who came in to see us, alumni and prospective members...   we really enjoyed getting the word about Civil Air Patrol out there!  We are very much looking forward to seeing some new young people at our upcoming meetings!

General Jimmy Doolittle's Great-Great Grandson was at the event!! (Below)  Two of out Cadets were incredibly fortunate to meet him, and pose for a picture in front of one of the few remaining B-25 Mitchells that actually saw combat in WWII.

Please take some time to look through the pictures.  Click on the icon below to go to our Flickr Photo Album, which
has all of the pictures from the event posted... Enjoy!
